An utopian society is a perfect world, versus a dystopian society which is an imperfect world. One of the characteristics of a dystopian society is information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted. From the beginning of the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the reader can interpret that the people have no freedom to an outside world. There are gates with barbed wire around them that prevents the people from leaving their district. The people are not allowed to think creatively.This means they can’t think of new ideas, or better ways to live their lives unless the capitol invents it. They are also not allowed to know information from the capitol. When the Capital comes up with a plan or an idea, the people who live in the districts, will not know the information unless (and if) the capital informs the districts. Another characteristic of a dystopian society is that citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance. The capitol watches over all the 12 districts, everyday 24/7 to make sure they are obeying the rules and not trying to rebel against the capitol. There is also another dystopian characteristic that is that citizens live in a dehumanized state.
